10 Amazing Films From 2022 Nobody Is Talking About
7. The Banshees Of Inisherin
Reuniting Brendan Gleeson and Colin
Farrell with In Bruges writer and director Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
made a name for itself at Venice Film Festival in September where it earned Farrell a Best Actor award and McDonagh Best Screenplay in addition to receiving a
15-minute standing ovation.
Taking place in 1923 on the titular (but fictional) Irish island, the film sees lifelong friends Colm (Gleeson) and Pádraic (Farrell) enter an escalating conflict when Colm decides he no longer wants to be his friend. Colm believes Pádraic is simply too dull to be around, but when Pádraic doesn’t get the message Colm threatens to start cutting off his own fingers until his former friend leaves him alone.
While the canon fire of the civil war on the mainland seems far away, the smaller conflict that’s about to breakout between these old companions will prove to be just as violent.
Fronted by outstanding performances from its leads, McDonagh’s latest outing is as funny and heartfelt as it is devastatingly tragic. It’s a poignant reflection on friendship and war, and it’s a film that you really need to see.
