10 Animated Movies That Disney Should Adapt Into Live-Action

2. Basil: The Great Mouse Detective

Everyone loves Sherlock Holmes- whether he's a fist-fighting lad about town, a cocky sleuth in the present day, a young boy... or a mouse. Yes, a mouse. The Great Mouse Detective follows Basil and Dawson, a.k.a Holmes and Watson, as they try to take down their devious arch-enemy Ratigan on the streets of Victorian London.

Audiences of the big and small screen have established they're hungry for more and more Sherlock Holmes, so a family-friendly version isn't such a bad idea. And with all the potential of a gothic London inspired by film noir is too tempting not to give the greenlight to- Aardman's latest Pirates! film demonstrates that it can work well.

But the filmmakers shouldn't look to copy TV's Sherlock and the Robert Downey Jr film series- the original film's lighthearted tone was well received in comparison to Disney's previous film, The Black Cauldron. Assemble the best of british comedy for a witty adventure in the vein of Monty Python or Aardman, and Disney could have a holiday hit on their hands for the cold, winter season.

This is one the less risky properties to be revisited- and in Ratigan, this new series of live-action adaptations could see its first truly memorable villain.

Maybe they could even go meta and pluck actors who are working well in Sherlock and put them together - perhaps Benedict Cumberatch and Jude Law, or Robert Downey Jr and Martin Freeman? But it's safe to say this kind of fun, amusing caper never truly goes out of fashion and it would be nice to have an all-round fun disney adaptation that doesn't get too heavy.
