10 Animated Movies That Should Have Won The Oscar For Best Animation (But Didn't Because The Award Didn't Exist Yet)

The first, the original, the dawn of animated feature film. Snow White, as of 2020, is 83-years-old. What this film means to the history of filmmaking, its impact on what the medium has come to be, and just how extraordinary it was for a film made in the mid to late '30s, is staggering.

However, putting its profound effect aside. Snow White is still by all measures a really good movie. Its story, taken from The Brothers Grimm, is one of betrayal, friendship and loss. Themes that set the tone for all Disney features, animated or otherwise, to come.

Obviously, in 1937 there was no such thing as animated features until this came along, so there was no Oscar awarded for it. It did though, get a deserved nomination for Best Musical Score.

In light of Snow White's achievement, the Academy did something very special to honour it; it made a normal-sized Oscar in special recognition for the film, as well as seven smaller ones to signify the Dwarves in the film - a distinction the Academy has yet to repeat in the making of its statues.

The field it created has become so much more than the original work was made to be, with styles and tones that vastly differ, but all of which owe their existence to this one film about a Princess, a Witch, and seven loveable Dwarves. Hi Hooo!
