10 Announced Movie Sequels Happening WAY Too Late
7. Dirty Dancing 2
Dirty Dancing is an undeniable cultural touchstone of the 1980s, and though it led to a TV series, 2004 prequel movie, and hugely popular stage show, only now is an honest-to-God sequel finally getting made.
In 2020, it was confirmed that Dirty Dancing 2 is in active development, with Jennifer Grey set to reprise the role of Baby, while Jonathan Levine (50/50, The Night Before) will direct.
But let's get the obvious out of the way first - Patrick Swayze died all the way back in 2009, and given that the original movie was entirely motivated by his dynamic with Grey, it's hard to picture a sequel that exists without him.
Trying to both compensate for Swayze's absence and replicate the chemistry of the original leads is a basically thankless task, especially as Dirty Dancing is still a much-loved film almost 40 years later, whose many fans are presumably content to just... keep watching it. Nobody asked for this.
