10 Anticipated Movie Sequels Stuck In Development Hell

1. Sherlock Holmes 3

Off the back of his role in establishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. took on a very different job from Tony Stark in 2009. Yes, the arrogance and charm were still there, but Sherlock Holmes was a detective, not a superhero.

Teaming up with Jude Law as John Watson, Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes won fans over immediately, as did the sequel, Game of Shadows, in no small part thanks to the addition of Jared Harris as Professor Moriarty. With the film adapting the Reichenbach Falls story, Sherlock was believed to be dead, until he returned home seemingly fine with no explanation.

Aside from the cliffhanger to address, there needs to be a third Sherlock Holmes chapter simply because they are so damn entertaining. Initial confirmation of the development of a threequel came way back in 2018, and like most movies on this list, there has been very little to work with since.

The most recent news came from Jude Law himself, who told The Playlist that there is a new iteration of the script, and a great will for the film to be made. Ultimately, this doesn't mean a great deal, and with the emergence of Enola Holmes, it may be that her brother from another franchise has missed his opportunity.
