12 Years A Slave was a brilliantly gruelling drama about American slavery, and it is for sure the frontrunner to take Best Picture at the Oscars, but is it the best film of the five nominated here? Close, but no cigar. While it easily bests films like Captain Phillips, Philomena and Rush, it is thoroughly outdone in my opinion by Gravity. Yet as we all know, sci-fi films rarely do well at awards shows not specifically tailored to sci-fi, and so it had to settle for a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuarón, which was inevitable by sheer force of will. Is 12 Years probably the most awards-friendly film of the five? Despite its grim subject matter, I would hazard to say yes, because it is a card-carrying "prestige" film, yet that doesn't mean it's the best film, or more specifically, that it should have beaten Gravity for the gong. What do you think? Did I miss any epic snubs? Sound off in the comments!
