10 Awesome Action Movies That Didn't Need A Sequel, Remake Or Reboot
3. The Rock
Michael Bay's second movie is still his best, with his sophomore outing boasting all of the director's signature visual and stylistic flourishes before they had the chance to descend into self-parody, as well as boasting one of the 1990s best odd-couple double acts in Nicolas Cage and Sean Connery.
The two leading men generate plenty of chemistry as they form a mutual respect while saving the day and trade plenty of memorable barbs along the way, many of which seem to bear the hallmarks of a certain Quentin Tarantino, who performed un-credited re-writes on the script.
The Rock boasts one of the finest and most eclectic ensemble casts that the genre has ever assembled, with Cage making a seamless transition from critically-acclaimed dramatic actor to genuine action hero in the process. Michael Bay admitted that he originally planned on making a sequel that followed Stanley Goodspeed being pursued by the government for the microfilm that was now in his possession, forcing him to track down John Mason for assistance.
As great as it would have been to see these characters again, and as much as fans would loved to have seen a sequel to The Rock, Bay's track record for sequels hasn't exactly proven to be particularly great, and the movie didn't really need a follow-up either.
