So many great British films go unnoticed but such is life in a world where big budget Hollywood movies dominate the box office. Case in point? Possum – the feature film debut from Matthew Holness, co-creator of cult TV series Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace. But whereas Darkplace was pure horror parody, Possum is a psychological horror that plays it totally straight to disturbing effect.

Adapted from a short story penned by Holness himself, it stars Sean Harris as disgraced children’s puppeteer Philip – a tortured soul who returns to his Norfolk childhood home accompanied by an abominable marionette of his own making to confront the sinister uncle (Alun Armstrong at his grimiest) that made his boyhood hell.

Don’t let the fact it looks like an ‘evil puppet’ horror on the surface put you off. The marionette that gives the film its name is genuinely creepy and used sparingly and overall Possum plays out far more like a disturbing homage to British horrors of the 1970s more than anything resembling a Puppet Master movie.
