10 Awesome Movie Characters Ruined By Terrible Writing

3. Mako Mori - Pacific Rim: Uprising

Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) was the easy standout character in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim: she may not have had an awesomely ridiculous name like "Stacker Pentecost" (Idris Elba), but she was the closest thing the movie had to a fully developed character.

Between the devastating loss of Mako's family in a Kaiju attack as a child and her being subseqeuntly adopted by Pentecost, she's an effortlessly sympathetic and likeable character, who also happens to be a resourceful and badass Jaeger pilot.

Infuriating it was, then, when Mako was relegated to a glorified cameo role in the lame-brained sequel, Pacific Rim: Uprising, as a suited-up General kept at arm's length from most of the action.

Worse than that, Mako is killed off early in the movie by rogue Jaeger Obsidian Fury in staggeringly underwhelming fashion. There's no heroic final stand or sacrifice - just a helpless woman in a chopper being knocked out of the sky. Lame.

Del Toro never would've done Mako dirty like this, and it still hurts. If she had to die, it should've been in the climax, laying down her life for the greater good just like her father did in the first film.
