10 Awesome Movie Inventions (That Would Suck In Real Life)

7. Blade Runner: Flying Car

Men In Black 3
Warner Bros. Pictures

Mankind has been wishing for flying cars ever since movies like Blade Runner, and for good reason. Flying cars would solve any congestion problem, travel times would be significantly shorter, and flying a car just sounds way more fun than driving a car. Unfortunately, whilst everyone is glossy-eyed over the pros of flying cars, there are some pretty glaring cons that render flying cars impractical to live with.

Normal cars have to face traffic from four directions, but flying cars will have to deal with additional traffic from above and below. This leads in to the supposed solving of the traffic congestion problem. Yes, the roads will be clearer, but all this means is that the road traffic will be migrated to the skies and air traffic is already pretty crazy with the amount of airplanes flying everyday. Adding in flying cars to the mix will be a nightmare for any future air traffic controller to manage. There are also big problems with fender benders. An accident involving a flying car will result in a fiery death a mass of flaming metal hurtling towards Earth and the people below. Not exactly a convincing argument for abandoning road cars.

That's not even mentioning the various skyscrapers and power lines in the way or the fact that flying cars are going to be nothing more than flying lightning rods.

My life story is nothing special. I haven't cured ebola, I'm nowhere near stopping terrorism, and I'm still working on that climate change problem. Instead, all I've done so far is put a few hundred words together in an attempt to make people laugh. You can follow me at @Fry_ying_pan but don't be offended if I don't tweet back. It's usually because I've spent too long trying to think up a witty response that the reply window has closed.
