10 Awesome Movie Jobs You Had No Idea Existed
5. Training Jim Carrey To Withstand 8 Hours In The Makeup Chair
Most jobs on a movie set are challenging and exhausting, but then there's the responsibility of preventing peak-era Jim Carrey from totally losing his s**t.
While shooting Ron Howard's 2000 adaptation of the How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey spent hours and hours per day in the makeup chair in order to be transformed into the title character, which in a recent interview he likened to "being buried alive every day."
After spending eight hours in makeup on the first day of filming, Carrey even kicked a hole in his trailer, and told director Howard that he simply couldn't continue.
With his A-list star threatening to pull out, Howard had to come up with a creative solution fast, turning to producer-pal Brian Grazer, who had the nifty idea to bring in some hired help to give Carrey a mental lift.
Grazer ended up employing a man trained to teach CIA operatives how to endure horrendous torture, tasking him with psychologically conditioning Carrey to withstand the hours in makeup each day.
Though it was an absolutely necessary step given that Carrey had the Grinch makeup applied 92 times in total, at least the makeup team managed to whittle the time required down from eight hours to just two-and-a-half by the end of shooting.
Despite being paid $20 million for the role, Carrey needed outside assistance to deal with the psychological torment of such a long, intensive makeup process, proving beyond any doubt that you truly can't put a price on comfort.
