10 Awesome Movies With Terrible Endings
2. Hancock - The Unnecessary Husband/Wife Twist
Admittedly, this next entry is more a case of an unwanted twist and entire final act rather than just a strictly awful ending.
The majority of the Will Smith-starring superhero tale known as Hancock focuses on the central flawed superhuman, with the first two-thirds of the feature being an often hilarious and compelling character study as the titular hero goes from reckless crime fighter to more respectable and popular hero.
Rather than keeping the focus on Smith's central figure for the entirety of the picture, though, the movie was needlessly complicated by a silly third-act twist.
You see, Hancock wasn't actually the only superhuman out there, folks. You know the wife of the PR man helping better our hero's public image? It turns out she was actually also an angel/god thing who was once married to Hancock. She then left him after he lost his memory 80 years earlier.
Oh, and if the two spend too long around one another, they lose their powers and become mortal - how fun.
Shifting from dark comedy to an overly serious drama from the moment the unnecessary twist hits, all of that momentum built up during that refreshing and consistently riotous first hour or so was soon lost post-odd genre shift.
A promising beginning and middle is ultimately spoiled by a jarring ending that feels like it belongs in another movie.
