10 Awesome Obscure Alan Rickman Roles You Probably Missed
6. Galaxy Quest
Alan Rickman and a sci fi movie? There must be some mistake. Surely the man once voted among the 50 most handsome actors in the world wouldnt pull on a bald cap, plaster purple fins to his head and adopt the role of a Shakespeare-touting, telepathic alien named Alexander? Except in 1999, just a month after his performance as Metatron in Dogma saw his star rise higher than ever, thats exactly what he did. And weirdly enough, it worked. Released on Christmas Day, the warm-hearted satire scored dozens of award nominations and grossed close to $100m at the box office, a fine return for an action comedy whose main purpose was to poke fun at Star Trek. Rickman himself is a revelation as Alexander, by turns hilarious and hopeless, sardonic and spectacular. Starring alongside Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen and Tony Shalhoub, its a team that shouldn't really work on paper but in reality proved so popular that the film remains a beloved cult classic to this day.
