10 Awesome Recent Movies That Must Never Get Sequels
8. Hereditary
Ari Aster's mesmerising horror masterpiece is one of the most haunting and genuinely upsetting entries into the genre in years, a devilish directorial debut for Aster that gives Toni Collette the floor for a career-best performance.
If you don't want to know how the movie ends, stop reading now. Hereditary's finale sees the coven successfully placing the demon Paimon inside the body of Peter (Alex Wolff), presumably kick-starting his reign of terror on Earth.
If this movie was released by any studio other than A24, there would probably be aggressive plans for a sequel already, which follows Paimon and his sycophants as they terrorise the world. It's a terrible idea, obviously, and it's far more interesting for audiences to think for themselves about what happens once the credits roll.
Will It Happen?: Almost definitely not. Aster is already busy shooting his unrelated second feature, Midsommar, and though he has confirmed he has ideas for a sequel, the film feels so brilliantly standalone that a spin-off set within the same world is probably the most you can hope for.
