3. Supernova

Criminally overlooked by both the Oscars and general punters this past year, Supernova is a heart-wrenching drama focused on two partners of 20 years, Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), as they come to terms with Tusker's diagnosis of early onset dementia.

It's stating the obvious to declare Supernova a tear-jerker, but thanks to writer-director Harry Macqueen's sensitive work it's also so much more than a mere weepie drama.

Firth and Tucci imbue their characters with so much warmth despite the upsetting subject matter, though it's Tucci's portrayal of a man approaching the end of his life with bravery and dignity which absolutely steals the show.

He's never been better, and the same could certainly be argued for Oscar winner Firth also.

The premise may sound over-familiar and sentiment-rich on paper, but there's a disarming honesty to the writing and acting which helps it feel totally and utterly fresh.

Don't sleep on it any longer, but have something happy ready to watch afterwards.
