After reading the ancient Jedi texts, Rey learns that there is some old technology from before the Empire, hidden away under the First Order's new base on Coruscant. With every other form of communication blocked, the rebels gamble on this and send Finn, Rose, R2-D2, and C-3PO to access this new means of communication.

The ancient Jedi technology, powered by a giant Kyber crystal, is connected to more than 50 other planets, and against all odds, the team manage to find and access where it is hidden, and send a message out to potential allies around the galaxy.

The message took the form of an inspiring speech from Princess Leia, recorded using BB-8 in exactly the same way she used R2-D2 in A New Hope. Think "help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you're my only hope", but on a planetary level. General Organa's image would have appeared across these different worlds in a similar way to the lighting of the beacons in Lord of the Rings, rallying the previously out of reach galaxy to take up their arms and fight against the First Order.

Ultimately, the untimely death of Carrie Fisher would have prevented this even if the Duel of the Fates was made. Since Leia would have had a huge role in this movie, Fisher's passing may have been one of the main reasons the script was eventually scrapped.
