10 Awful Films The Lord Of The Rings Actors Want You To Forget
5. Andy Serkis (Gollum) - Stormbreaker
Anthony Horowitz's Alex Rider novels focuses on a teenager who becomes an MI6 agent. It may sound reminiscent of James Bond Jr but the first book, Stormbreaker, was such a hit, it launched a dozen sequels. With MGM scrambling to find the next big thing, the studio greenlit a Stormbreaker movie, hoping it it would become the next hot franchise.
Boasting a phenomenal cast including Ewan McGregor, Stephen Fry, Robbie Coltrane, Mickey Rourke, and Andy Serkis, it looked like the film had potential. Sadly, the whole cast feels wasted, especially Serkis. His character, Mr. Grin, was a circus knife-catcher who was left mute and facially disfigured after failing to catch a blade in his mouth. After being taken in by the corrupt entrepreneur, Darrius Sayle, he was turned into a personal assassin.
Here's the problem. Serkis is an extremely vocal performer and uses a diverse array of sounds to play iconic characters like Gollum, Baloo, Kong, and Caesar. So, WHY would anyone cast him as a character who can't speak? That's like casting James Earl Jones in a role with no dialogue! Although Serkis puts a lot of work into Mr Grin's physicality, it's not enough to save this flop.
