3. Evil Dead
The Movie: As with Halloween, Evil Dead is for many another classic horror movie that should have been left well alone, its lo-fi aesthetics and chaotic climax perfectly fine as it stands with no room for improvement. As The Cabin in the Woods has already demonstrated, if you want to revisit the horror classics of yesteryear, far better to do it through the prism of post-modernism and play out the conventions of the genre with a degree of knowing self-awareness. Regardless of the general inferiority of most of the horror classic remakes in recent years, clearly enough people are going to see them at the cinema and handing over their cash to warrant even more of them, and Evil Dead was no exception. It certainly isn't the worst remake of all time, but by the same token you can't help but be left with the aftertaste that it was pretty damn pointless, too. The Silver Lining: Given the propensity for horror remakes to wallow in unconvincing CGI it's a credit to the remake that they filmmakers largely stuck to practical effects. At least this made the gore - of which thankfully there was plenty - far more convincing than in other recent remakes. We only have to remind ourselves of 2011's The Thing to recall just how quickly bad CGI can really take us out of the moment.
