10 Batsh*t Crazy Japanese Movies You Have To See

9. Belladonna Of Sadness

When it comes to animated material of a sexual nature no country is more prolific in output than Japan - from straightforward erotica to demon tentacle rape, pretty much anything goes. Belladonna Of Sadness might be overtly interested in exploring sexual themes, but hentai this isn't - rather, it is more akin to the psychedelic animations of the early 1970s when it was produced such as Fantastic Planet. Sex, violence and witchcraft all play a role in the movie, but the real lure is the imaginatively animated way in which the central character's internal thoughts are portrayed on screen. It's the trippy art style reminiscent of Gustav Klimt combined with phallic imagery and strange sexual politics which makes Belladonna Of Sadness such an odd film, and while it may have ended the good fortunes of Mushi Pro studio it's coming back to cinemas this year in a 4K restoration.
