10 Behind-The-Scenes Glimpses Of Movie Scenes We Never Got To See
5. Eric Stoltz As Marty McFly - Back To The Future
Back to the Future was almost a very different movie for several reasons: it was almost called Spaceman from Pluto (!), the time machine was almost a fridge instead of a DeLorean, and plucky protagonist Marty McFly was almost played by young up-and-comer Eric Stoltz instead of Michael J. Fox.
Fox was director Robert Zemeckis' first choice to play Marty, but after scheduling conflicts prevented him from taking the part, Stoltz was hired as a replacement.
Yet four weeks into shooting, Zemeckis decided that Stoltz was miscast and dismissed him from the role, at which point Fox's schedule opened up and he was able to accept the part.
In more recent years, small clips and a few images of Stoltz as Marty have surfaced online including, quite ironically, the film's famous fading photograph.
Clearly Stoltz had the look for the part down pat, but according to Zemeckis and writer-producer Bob Gale, he didn't feel like a natural comedic fit for Marty.
Regardless of how Stoltz's portrayal would've turned out, it's tough to imagine anyone but Fox playing the role, so it's tough to argue with their decision.
It may have cost Universal $3 million in reshoots, but the resulting pop-culture phenomenon ensured it was worth totally it.
