If there was one man most capably armed to take on the cannibal adventure horror genre it was always going to be Eli Roth, the relentless gore purist who knows exactly where his passion came from.
Made for significantly less than most of the worst horrors of the year, Roth's hellish travelogue will feel like self-conscious parody to some, but it's more like a well-intentioned love letter to its ancestors and a work of passion for a director who could have been doing something a lot bigger and a lot more expensive.
