6. The Dark Tower

Idris Elba Dark Tower
Columbia Pictures

Adapting books for the big screen is never an easy task and it seems even more so the case with master of horror fiction Stephen King’s works, which tend to result in extreme hit and misses ranging from the brilliant (The Shining, The Shawshank Redemption) to the downright awful (Dreamcatcher, Children of the Corn).

So when it was announced that King’s long-running fantasy-horror series The Dark Tower was to receive the silver screen treatment it was predictably met with a bit of scorn. Many of King’s fanboys and fangirls were especially up in arms when it was confirmed that – shock! horror! black actor! – Idris Elba would be portraying the series’ main protagonist, gunslinger Roland Deschain, previously interpreted as a white-skinned, blue-eyed Clint Eastwood type.

But the combined talents of Elba alongside award-winning Danish director Nikolaj Arcel and co-star Matthew McConaughey hot on the heels of his acclaimed career renaissance, could actually put The Dark Tower among King’s better big screen adaptations. Here’s hoping, anyway.
