For those that aren’t familiar with the weird tale of the Winchester Mystery House, it goes like this: following the death of her husband, firearms tycoon William Wirt Winchester, in 1881 widow Sarah Winchester consulted a psychic who told her his death and that of their child 15 years earlier were the result of a curse imposed by the ghosts of people killed by Winchester rifles.

The only way to put an end to the hex was by moving out to California and building a grand house with her hefty inheritance to appease the spirits. The result was a sprawling 160 room mansion built over the course of 38 years until Sarah’s own death in the early 1920s that still stands today amidst reported hauntings.

Why such an interesting story has yet to be adapted for film is anyone’s guess, but now it’s been confirmed that The Spierig Brothers – who most recently directed the well-received, mind-bending sci-fi flick Predestination – will transfer the supernatural tale to the big screen. Helen Mirren will bring her acting chops to the role of Sarah Winchester and Aussie actor Jason Clarke is reportedly signed on to play a psychiatrist that sets out to debunk her superstitions but may just have his scepticism proved wrong.

Helen Jones hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
