Given his recent Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar wins for his performance as the titular clown prince of crime in Todd Philips's Joker, Joaquin Phoenix is more than qualified for a place on this list.
Carving a career from himself since the 80s, the newfound Academy Award winner has really came into his own in an already stellar resume that includes Gladiator, Her, and Walk The Line.
In 2017, however, Phoenix grabbed the attention of critics in Lynne Ramsey's You Were Never Really Here for his subdued outing as mentally-broken mercenary Joe - a performance The Telegraph dubbed one of his best. Contrast this with his comical performance in The Sisters Brothers as one half of the titular duo shortly after and Phoenix's versatility is clear.
However, it's the actor's most recent performance in the highly acclaimed Joker that establishes him as one of today's greats. Fully losing himself within a physical and unnerving interpretation of the popular villain, Phoenix gave audiences something new that's still generating plenty of buzz months later.
Rumours suggest Phoenix may reprise this role for a sequel - and given his Oscar-winning performance, this would be warmly welcomed.
