10 Best Closing Shots In Cinema History

8. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

004 Who can forget the stunning freeze frame on which superb western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ends? Though the film goes about depicting their roguish antics for most of its runtime, it's also got its romantic moments (namely through Katharine Ross' performance as Sundance's lover), and its genuinely hilarious ones, as the boys try to make it straight but simply can't bring themselves to. It all comes to a head, then, when the duo are caught stealing a payroll and end up boxed in by Bolivian soldiers, who severely wound them both. Their final discussion includes their future plans - namely trying to escape to Australia - keeping a cool, perhaps deluded head as ever, before they do the only thing they can, and run out into the courtyard, all guns blazing. Director George Roy Hill freezes on the pair, while gunshots ring out, a somewhat ambiguous ending that nevertheless suggests that they almost certainly perished in the shootout. Superb.
