7. Beetlejuice (1988)
Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!
No, nothing? Well, it was worth a try.
In Tim Burton's 1988 horror-comedy, Barbara (Geena Davis) and Adam Maitland (Alec Baldwin) die in a tragic car accident and find themselves haunting their former home, where the Deetzes (Catherine O'Hara and Jeffrey Jones) and their daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) have taken up residence. The pair invoke the spirit of Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), a stripy-suited bio-exorcist whose help is more than they bargained for.
There are few people this side of Antarctica who don't know the story of the spectral trickster, many of us having grown up with it or simply grown to love it – and with good reason. It's spooky, it's silly, and it's infinitely rewatchable, for Michael Keaton's career-defining role (take that, Batman/Birdman) if nothing else. Sure, it's not the scariest horror flick ever, but what it lacks in terror it makes up for in that warm fuzzy feeling it gives you every viewing.
However, although the movie is called Beetlejuice, the character only appears in 17 of its 92 minutes, leaving many of us wanting more. And, after over three decades in development hell, a sequel seems to finally be on the way, with Keaton and Ryder reprising their roles!
