10 Best Fan Theories For 2017's Biggest Movies
4. Split – The Unbreakable Connection Goes Deeper Than You Think
We’ve come to expect the old M. Night Shyamalan third act
plot twist by now. Bruce Willis was a ghost the whole time, the year was not
1897 but the present day and the big bad aliens were aquaphobic. His latest
movie Split was no different.
Starring James McAvoy as Kevin, a young man suffering from dissociative identity disorder with multiple personalities who abducts three teenage girls, Split treated us to a twist that connected the movie to Shyamalan’s 2000 film Unbreakable when Bruce Willis’s character David Dunn showed up in the closing scene.
That Split is a standalone sequel to Unbreakable is established but this fan theory – probably one of the most plausible this year – links the two films even further with two scenes that appear earlier in the film.
While talking to his therapist, it’s revealed that when Kevin was a child his father left on a train and never came back and later we see him lay a bouquet of flowers on a train platform which has led fan theorists to think that Kevin’s dad died on the very train crash that happens at the start of Unbreakable and was orchestrated by its villain Mr. Glass.
It’s likely that this theory will play out for real in Shyamalan’s forthcoming crossover sequel Glass, but we’ll have to wait until 2019 to see it.
