10 Best Films Where The Kidnapper Got The Girl

8. The Running Man (1987)

V for Vendetta
TriStar Pictures

This high concept adaption of the Stephen King story sees police helicopter pilot Ben Richards framed for a massacre during a food riot and sent to a labour camp in a dystopian version of 2017. He escapes and heads to his brother’s apartment, where he meets feisty composer Amber Mendez, who is now living there since Ben's brother was arrested.

The arguing pair are engrossing to watch, both fearless characters who initially loathe each other. Richards takes Mendez hostage when he realises he needs her credentials to enable him to flee to Hawaii. She initially pretends to go along with the ruse but alerts security at the airport, leading to his capture and forced participation in the titular game show.

Mendez starts to investigate him and finds the original footage of his helicopter flight, proving that he was framed. Now on his side, she becomes tenacious in trying to clear his name, leading to the government throwing her in The Running Man with Richards to conceal her story.

The film shows a great progression of their relationship as the show now forces them to work together to survive. Mendez’s anger at the corrupt government pushes her more into the arms of her once captor. By the finale they have exposed the lies, destroyed the gameshow and the two of them end the film departing the studio in each others arms and very much together.
