The Film:

In 2013 film fans were most definitely feeling pangs of reboot fatigue, with the horror genre in particular being ravaged and repackaged by buck-thirsty studio execs. When it was announced that Evil Dead was being re-upped, the moans and groans were slightly louder, given that Sam Raimi’s original is a cinema nasty cum cult classic that should have been untouchable.

But come the release of a frenetic, gory red band trailer, naysayers started to warm to the idea of venturing back into the woods again and all worries were washed away in a flood of blood when the film hit cinemas. Put simply, Evil Dead made it uncomfortable to visit the cinema again; helmer Fede Álvarez crafts a film that takes the lore and location of Raimi’s original, but gives us something fresh and much more over the top.

This is a constant assault on the senses that out gores (the puke geyser) and out grosses (yes, the tree is back) even the ickiest movies to come from the New French Extremity movement. Stick around post credits and there’s a ‘groovy’ treat in store that should calm even the most ardent of Dead fans.

Big Scare:

Possessed teen Mia introduces her tongue to a box cutter in a scene with no – excuse the pun – cutaways. Unflinching.
