10. The Ring (2002)
Based On: Japanese film Ringu (1998) The Ring was the first in a long line of American adaptations of Japanese horror flicks (including The Grudge and One Missed Call), and it is also the best. Describing the film doesn't adequately explain the genuine horror behind it, receiving a call that tells you that you're going to die in seven days seems like it is more in line with Crank Yankers than a seriously scary horror movie. But thanks to the creepy girl making her way out of the TV, I couldn't watch TV after 9PM for a month. A straightforward horror story (superbly directed by Gore Verbinski) can be scary if it is done well, and The Ring was a well-made movie.
