Rob Reiner is still another director who isnt content to play in one genre sandbox. His name might make you think of heartfelt romance or comedy, such as This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, or When Harry Met Sally. That would be a discredit to his more serious dramatic work like A Few Good Men, for which he was nominated for an Oscar. And even that would be a discredit to him, because you havent gotten the whole picture until you talk about Misery. Misery is a perfect title. Like Wake In Fright, there are no supernatural elements in this movie but there sure is a monster. Kathy Bates won the Academy Award for her performance of Annie Wilkes, an obsessive fan who rescues her favorite author (James Caan) from a car-crash and nurses him back to health. This Stephen King adaptation turns grisly however when the author realizes she is actually holding him captive until his book is written more to her liking. The depicted psychological torture might actually be worse than the physical, although thats pretty miserable too.
Joe Sippy grew up in Chicago and now resides in Los Angeles. He enjoys corn dogs, rap music, and horror movies. On weekends you can find him in the ocean, surfing very poorly.
