10 Best Horror Movies Of The Decade

4. The Cabin In The Woods (2011)

Cabin In The Woods

What's a better horror movie than one that knows every single convention of the genre and happily manipulates them to its will? The Cabin in the Woods is so acutely aware of its trappings that even its title gives the game away, parodying the heavy hitting classics that came before it with the glibness of a used movie salesman. Which is essentially the best way of describing this cobbled together narrative of all things meta: it's the second hand movie shop.

Director Drew Goddard weaves a story that's one half terrifying genre antics and another half secret government conspiracy, taking everything we already know and putting a shiny new spin on it by giving purpose and reason to horror movies both in and outside of the four walls of this movie.

What might appear as an Evil Dead rip-off that sees a group of teenagers slowly picked off by torturous zombies soon reveals itself to be but a small part of a much wider plan - and the peak of intricate, entertaining, and incredibly intelligent filmmaking in black comedy becomes clear by its closing moments.

To tell too much of this movie without seeing it would be a crime, so do yourself a favour and watch it for the love of all that is unholy.
