10 Best ‘I’m Dead And I Know It’ Moments In Vampire Horror Movies
5. Vampires (1998) - Montoya
Also known as John Carpenter’s Vampires, this film offered up the signature Carpenter approach to the much-loved monster. A group of vampire hunters are sent by the Vatican to wipe out an increasingly dangerous group of the beasts, headed up by Jack Crow and his right hand man Montoya.
A newly-turned vampire joins their team in the way of Katarina, a prostitute with a psychic link to the vampire alpha. Along the way Montoya is bitten by Katarina, making him an enemy of renowned hunter Crow, but he manages to keep his bite hidden until the very end - continuing to serve his friend and colleague even two days after he is first bitten.
As the film comes to a close, Crow knows that he needs to kill Montoya and Katarina because their transformations are irreversible. In a tearful conversation with Montoya he confirms as much, with Montoya acknowledging and understanding that he must soon die by Crow’s hand.
It’s a good emotional moment as Crow decides to give Montoya and Katarina a two day headstart on his hunt for them, given that Montoya gave him two days of faithful service even after being turned. The two share a brotherly hug as Montoya forgives Crow for what he has to do, before driving off in a futile attempt to delay the inevitable.
