10 Best Movie Posters Of 2017
8. Kong: Skull Island
It's not hard to pick holes in Kong: Skull Island. For starters, it's another contrived effort to build up a cinematic universe; this new take on the 1933 classic is set in the same story world as the 2014 Godzilla reboot, and as such exists primarily to set the stage for 2020's Godzilla Vs Kong. On top of which, the film itself suffers from substandard plot and character work, largely squandering a talented cast including Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman and Samuel L Jackson.
However, the main thing Kong: Skull Island gets right is that which 2014's Godzilla failed to do: it puts the giant monster action centre stage. While director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' film tells a simple story, it does so with real panache and vigour, dishing up some of the most spectacular visuals of any film released in 2017.
This poster beautifully evokes one of the most iconic images from the film, and demonstrates how it's as much a Vietnam war movie as it is a giant monster epic. The influence of Apocalypse Now is there for all to see; although this alternate poster makes that link even more blatant.
