For a remake of a property that had already been remade several times over, the trailer for the Bradley Cooper-directed A Star Is Born packed an unexpected emotional punch.

Rather than focusing on plot details, the trailer put its focus almost entirely on selling the mood of the film. This consisted of showing off early looks at Matthew Libatique's stunning cinematography, several intimate close-ups emphasizing the chemistry between Cooper and Lady Gaga, and most importantly of all, lots of the staggeringly great original music from the film.

And in an incredibly smart move, the trailer features almost exclusively footage from the first act of the film alone. The trailer comes to a climax with the now-iconic moment when Cooper brings Gaga's Ally out on stage to perform Shallows, with a rapid-fire montage of shots from later in the film as Gaga's voice reaches this remarkable crescendo. It creates this intense synchrony between the visual and the audio that's overwhelmingly powerful.

Without revealing hardly anything about the film's second two acts, this trailer is able to sell the film based solely on the power of its visuals, its songs, and the incendiary chemistry of its stars.
