Multiverse movies are all the rage, and while the Marvel Cinematic Universe has inarguably cornered the market on mega-budget universe-hopping fare, they've been categorically outdone by a new movie made on a fraction of the budget.

Everything Everywhere All at Once, an action-drama from Swiss Army Man directors Daniels, is about as ambitious and stylistically daring as live-action multiverse movies get.

Michelle Yeoh stars as Chinese-American laundromat owner Evelyn Wang, who is suddenly charged with saving the multiverse from a malevolent threat by slingshotting her consciousness to other universes, acquiring her alternate selves' skills, and then using said skills to battle her enemies.

Everything Everywhere All at Once is a frantically paced, hilarious, and totally insane film that somehow manages to balance out its surreal, absurdist action with genuinely heartfelt character-driven drama.

Beyond the eye-melting style on offer - on a modest budget of $25 million no less - Michelle Yeoh gives an Oscar-worthy performance in the lead role, while Stephanie Hsu, Ke Huy Quan, James Hong, and Jamie Lee Curtis all bring sharp support.

At once shamelessly silly and totally earnest, this mesmerising film tackles the multiverse with peerless levels of imagination. Hopefully the Academy won't forget about it next year.
