8. "Young And Beautiful" - The Great Gatsby
The general consensus might have been that Baz Lurhmann did something of an injustice to F. Scott Fitzgerald's overwhelmingly famous novel, but there's a strange, twisted, and almost otherworldly beauty to be found at the core of his otherwise ill-fated adaptation: that's to say, the bulk of the film is fairly dull and shallow, but there are a few scenes that stand out for their - frankly - magnetic beauty. This scene, backed by the both equally ill-fitting and somehow brilliantly perfect "Young and Beautiful" by Lana Del Ray has Leonardo DiCaprio's Jay Gatsby exposing the excesses of his lifestyle to his true love Daisy (Carey Mulligan), whilst a well-groomed Tobey Maguire looks on. In itself, this scene is somewhat awkward and perhaps even cringeworthy to watch, but there's something in the execution and those obviously CG-rendered backgrounds that taps into something almost majestically sombre. Mesmerising - for all the wrong reasons, perhaps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ilBZ-u_0fg
