10 Best Musical Scenes In Movies
4. The End - Apocalypse Now
When it came out in the mid-60's, "The End" by the Doors certainly stood out as an oddity in the era of Flower Power. Instead of singing about peace and love, listeners were treated to one of the most unsettling pieces of music from the psychedelic era, with Jim Morrison going from controlled rock frontman to a primal ferocious animal.
Once the elaborate song was brought into the mind of Francis Ford Coppola, the director created a breathtaking feat of film making in his opus Apocalypse Now. The initial droning nature of the song settles you into the environment of Vietnam, with piano and guitars set to the backdrop of controlled destruction throughout the jungle. From there, we cut to Martin Sheen's character, who is in his bedroom slowly struggling to get a grip on reality.
With the song picking up steam, the music turns Sheen's every move into another layer of his mind being slowly stripped away. Sheen's eyes throughout the scene go from existential despair to killing-machine daggers as he cuts himself up and is left as a broken shell of a human being by the song's end. A perfect encapsulation of the Hellish nature of war and the Doors' impeccable knack for creating a disturbing sonic mood.
