Starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Farrell and Barry Keoghan, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a 2017 psychological horror based on the Ancient Greek play Iphenia at Aulis by Euripedes. It is produced by A24 yet again, so be prepared for the associated confusion and creepiness throughout.

In short, the story follows surgeon Dr Steven Murphy, who lives a perfect family life until he introduces Martin, a fatherless teenage boy who he takes under his wing.

After disturbing insinuations that Martin has a connection to one of the father's less successful surgeries, the boy curses him with a decision to let his family die of disease, or sacrifice one of them to save them all. Just another classic family dinner party game.

For fans of the production company, this film flew over the radar compared to the more famous horrors like Hereditary and Midsommar, but is arguably just as good. It is however a tough watch, with some extreme scenes as the narrative progresses.

Much like their other horrors, A24 looks at creepy long hallway scenes and uncomfortably long silences that make you want to crawl in to your seat just as much as sitting up to see what happens next.
