7. The Shining

Much like American Psycho, Stanley Kubrick's 1980's movie The Shining (based on Stephen King's novel) plays on the mindset of a man slowly losing his already questionable sanity.

In short, the narrative follows Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson), who moves with his wife and son to the isolated Overlook Hotel as he takes his new job as caretaker over the winter.

After the staff leave subtle warnings before their departures, the family are left alone to look after the building and it's grounds. Jack is soon taken over by what he perceives as the spirits within, whilst his son sees premonitions of the present and future due to his shining powers.

This film is definitely a rollercoaster ride, but a classic for anyone who is a fan of the genre and of King's books. Although quite a long movie, and not reliant on major jump scare moments and ghosts running from room to room, the narrative plays on the mind of the audience as they experience Jack's journey with him, making it a well deserved classic horror.

(Also, avoid the sequel).
