10 Best Space Movies Of All Time

4. Moon (2009)

Moon sam Rockwell
Sony Pictures Classics

Moon is an excellent homage, indie companion piece and second cousin to Kubrick's 2001, which manages to tread completely new ground while still remaining humorously yet politely referential.

Sam Rockwell is Sam Bell, a lone helium-3 miner on the dark side of the moon, whose life begins to unravel as he discovers mysterious doppelgängers of himself around his base. He must find a way to break free from a short-lived, false, fatalistic existence in space.

As we know, Rockwell is no stranger to space and neither is the fictional world he inhabits, with its intentionally retro aesthetic; or those he interacts with - 2001's HAL 9000 shines clearly through Kevin Spacey's GERTY, the even-toned AI companion who communicates facial expressions via emojis.

This is all complimented by a score from the brilliant Clint Mansell (best known for his iconic Requiem for a Dream soundtrack, but with genre chops from Aronofsky's The Fountain).

All in all, it makes a lot of sense that The Man Who Fell to Earth's son - Duncan Jones - would bring us one of the best space films ever made.
