10 Best Superhero Films Of The 2010s
1. Logan (2017)
The film that set the standard for the R-Rated comic book movie, Logan is something entirely different from the big, bombastic superhero flicks with flying men and symbols of hope. This was full of misery and despair from the get-go.
It's the near-future and the mutants are gone, Logan is losing his healing abilities and Xavier is losing his mind. The former-Wolverine is confronted by a girl named Laura with identical powers to him and the three must travel across the States to get the girl to safety.
This is a film that doesn't rely on flashy effects, cheeky one-liners and big action set-pieces. It's all about character work and is almost entirely dependent on the three leads, who two of which give career-best performances, and Dafne Keen giving a fantastic big-screen debut despite saying very little. The film truly belongs to Hugh Jackman & Sir Patrick Stewart however, who after portraying their respective characters for 17 years are finally able to end their runs on a high, giving an emotional gravitas not seen in the X-Men features before or since.
Many have claimed it as the closest thing we'll get to a Last Of Us movie and, in fairness, there's plenty of similarities (excluding the premise of young girl being protected by an angry, hairy man). Most prominent of which is the theme of pushing forward when everything has been lost and finding something else to fight for.
It's a shame that the series went downhill so quickly after this, as this truly felt like the perfect end of an era, as well as the beginning of something new and fresh, not just for X-Men, but the superhero genre as a whole.
