10 Best Superhero Movies Of The 80s

7. Popeye

Batman 1989
Buena Vista Pictures

Yes, that Popeye. The beloved cartoon got its own live action adaptation in 1980 in the form of a musical comedy. Everyone’s favorite sailor man, played here by none other than Robin Williams, is every bit the hero we had come to expect from the animated screens. There was one crucial exception though, this Popeye hated spinach!

At the beginning of the movie, Popeye arrives at a small in search of his missing father. His path eventually leads him to the Oyl family and their daughter Olive.

While staying over their boarding house, Popeye becomes acquainted with Olive, who was soon to be wed to Captain Bluto, the brutish Captain running the town on behalf of a Commodore.

The Sailor Man and Ms. Oyl soon take a liking one another, before coming across an abandoned baby whom they name Swee’Pea. A baby who could predict the future. As you can imagine, Bluto becomes enraged when he learns of Popeye and Olive and takes it out on her family. As the town is being pressed down by Bluto’s tyrannical thumb, it’s up to Popeye to save them.

Yes everything about this movie felt disorganized and chaotic, but it was in the best possible way. All of it combined to create a nice watching experience for everyone to enjoy.
