10 Best Unsung Actors From Each Movie Genre

2. James Rebhorn - The Coming Of Age Drama/Al Pacino Cannon Fodder

Gremlins Dick Miller
Universal Pictures

There's no shortage of actors who can include "Berated by Al Pacino Onscreen" on their CV, but James Rebhorn holds his own the best. Not that the actor has a chance at then venomous rancor Pacino spews his way at the climax of Martin Brest's Scent of a woman - who could? - just that he's a formidable spineless twerp.

Rebhorn has a long history of playing weasels, and it peaked with Woman, in which he is Mr. Trask, the unbearably pompous headmaster of the Baird Academy.

The scene in which Pacino runs Rebhorn down is the stuff of legend, earning the actor his first Oscar and arguably transforming a typically quiet actor into a ragin' Cajun only James Carville could rival. You absolutely have to be an actor that can convincingly take that verbal assault and still walk away limping - not prideful, but certainly defiant.

Rebhorn rematched against another loud, showy Pacino role as the slimy district attorney who'll stop at nothing to see him behind bars again. He should have taught masterclasses in verbal abuse recovery.

In later years, he would play troubled fatherly roles, like that of Carrie Mathison's bi-polar father in Homeland, but he's probably more well-regarded in Broadway circles.

He passed away after a long battle with melanoma at 65, writing his own obituary. It can be read here, and it's the kind of unflattering, decent writing a man whose work has spanned three decades and 129 credits deserves.
