10 Biggest Casting Mistakes In MCU History
1. Hugo Weaving (Captain America: The First Avenger)
This casting would have been a bloody epic game-changer if it had been actually thought through.
In their early films, Marvel weren't exactly seasoned in dealing with actors who worked on their own terms, finding themselves usually surrounded by performers who were grateful for the chance and who would take your hand off if you offered them a multi-picture deal.
That's why when Hugo Weaving took on the role of Captain America's arch-nemesis, Red Skull, the obvious plan would be to have him reprise the role on a few more occasions.
Yeah, about that…
Even though Weaving signed a multi-picture deal, he doesn't strike you as a man who likes to go back to the well too many times. He's an actor who likes to continually challenge himself, so the idea of playing the same character repeatedly was never going to appeal to him.
The man stated that he would obviously have to return to the series if requested but publicly spoke of how he knew Marvel 'wouldn't want to force (him) to do it'.
It created an unnecessary issue for Marvel as they now couldn't use one of their greatest attempts at a villain on screen - at a time where they were floundering in that department - and Red Skull was sidelined until 2018's Infinity War, with the role being recast and Ross Marquand taking up the mantel instead.
If only they'd cast him from the start, eh?
