Although it was theorized for a while that Captain America would be worthy to lift Thor's hammer, Mjollnir, many were skeptical.

Avengers: Age Of Ultron complicated matters with a scene in which all of the Avengers took turns trying to lift the hammer. No one was able to even nudge it, though when Cap gives it a shot we see the slightest movement, so small that it could easily go unnoticed. For a while it was assumed that although Cap was worthy enough to slightly move the hammer, he could not fully lift it.

Avengers: Endgame finally put this debate to rest. In the final battle with Thanos, we were treated to one of the most satisfying moments in MCU history as Cap calls the hammer straight to his hand and joins Thor in battle!

It's assumed that Cap could lift Mjollnir all along, at least since Age Of Ultron, but simply chose not to show off his ability to protect Thor's ego. What a great friend!
