5. Magnificent Seven Remake Gains a Writer, Loses Tom Cruise

MGM has been working on rebooting The Magnificent Seven for quite some time now. The original 1960 film starred Steve McQueen, Yul Brenner, Charles Bronson, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, Horst Buchholz and James Coburn as seven American gunmen, hired to protect a small village in Mexico from a group of marauding bandits. The film itself is a reimagining of the Japanese film Seven Samurai, and was recently selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural and historical significance. According to The Wrap, the script for the remake will undergo changes from writer/director John Lee Hancock (Saving Mr. Banks, The Blind Side) but has lost Tom Cruise, most likely due to the actor's packed schedule. Not only is he starring in next year's Edge of Tomorrow, but has a handful of projects in various stages of development including Mission: Impossible 5, a Jack Reacher sequel, and Joseph Kosinski's Go Like Hell. Past reports have cited that Matt Damon, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Costner may be involved in the project, but since the film is still in early stages of development (and currently undergoing Hancock's rewrite), solid details will be few and far between until things start moving forward.
