10 Biggest Parts Of The Marvel Movie Formula (That Will Destroy The Series)
8. A Strong Female Character
Although they still baulk at giving a whole stand-alone movie to a female lead, Marvel aren't against filling their movies with strong women. Even in 2014 a female-led movie is viewed a success if it places in the Top 20 at the box office (see Lucy), so it's commendable Marvel are adding some diversity to their ensembles. Although it feels a lot like ticking boxes to us. You see, every Marvel movie (The Incredible Hulk aside) has a strong, independent female whose key character trait is that they're strong and independent. Pepper Potts was always able to see through Tony Stark's swagger, Lady Sif was strong and Jane far from a dumb bimbo in Thor, Agent Carter was the antidote to early-twentieth century sexism and obviously both Black Widow and Gamora were flat out awesome The only ones who feels like they're characterised this way with a genuine reason are the latter two, who actually play a part in the plot at large. All the others are the way they are because devolving into Olive Oyl/Willie Scott/Mary Jane is far too un-PC. It seems silly to be complaining about too many non-shrieking heroine female characters, but when they're all the same just to be different it's just another gender stereotype. The male heroes of the MCU are varied (or as varied as their sources allow) and flawed, making them actually interesting.
