10 Biggest Star Trek Moments Of 2021

2. Finishing The Burn Storyline

Star Trek Discovery Season 3 Crew

Star Trek: Discovery's third season finale was the only episode of that season to air in 2021, offering a resolution to many of the plot points that had been dropped throughout the series. The Burn, which this writer openly hated, was put to bed with the revelation that Starfleet finally had access to an enormous cache of dilithium once more.

The biggest moment of the episode comes with the promotion of Michael Burnham to the captain of Discovery. This is a historic moment for so many reasons. While Burnham is not the first character in Star Trek who started as the lead in their series, only to be promoted to captain at the end of the third season (that honour goes to Benjamin Sisko), she is the first leading black woman to command a starship in Star Trek.

Her final words of the episode - let's fly - are filled with emotion. Excitement, honour, humility, and pride - all mixed together, inspiring the crew and viewers alike to reach for the stars. In a season rocked by the effects of Covid-19, Discovery's third season ended on a high note, with the first few episodes of season four proving that it is in no danger of slowing down any time soon.
