Star Trek: Lower Decks had a phenomenal run during its second season. Legacy characters returned in the form of Tom Paris and Sonya Gomez, not to mention Will Riker's early stint on the series. The Titan made another appearance, as did a Miranda-class vessel, those damn Cardassian lights, and a veritable tonne of Easter Eggs littered throughout the show.

The USS Archimedes was a welcome addition to the fleet, showing what happens when an Excelsior-class and a Sovereign-class ship have a baby. Yet, surprisingly, it was the Pakled storyline that was the thread joining the season together. These villains struggle to be taken seriously, with their threats usually followed by deep comedy.

So, when a Pakled planet is destroyed in the season finale, with Captain Freeman arrested for the crime, it was a true jaw-dropping ending. The show managed to keep the tone light, yet it was certainly a dark twist in this upbeat iteration of Star Trek. It has also left fans salivating for the third season to arrive in 2022. Added to all of that, the Kzinti officer quickly became this writer's favourite addition to Trek, period.
